5 Exciting Family Activities in Koh Samui
Sawasdee krub and welcome to my island home!
Look, doing nothing on our white sand beaches with a cold fresh coconut in hand is amazing—honestly, even us locals do it whenever we can. But if you’re bringing the whole family to Koh Samui, there is so much more to do than just sunbathing.
Whether your family loves eating good food, chasing adventures on the water, or hanging out with nature, we’ve got something for everyone. Here are 5 of my top recommendations for a family holiday you’ll be talking about for years!
1. Learn to Cook Real Thai Food Together
Food is everything to us here in Thailand, and trust me, learning how to whip up authentic Thai dishes is the best souvenir you can take home.
Hit the Local Market: Most classes start with a trip to a fresh morning market. Kids love the vibrant colors, and you’ll get to smell fresh herbs, pick sweet Thai basil, and see how we press coconut milk from scratch.
Get Cooking: Under the guidance of a local chef, everyone gets involved—kids can wash veggies or mash ingredients, while parents learn the real secret to a Papaya salad or authentic Pad Thai.
Feast Time: At the end, you all sit down together to eat what you cooked! When you get back home, you can recreate Mango Sticky Rice whenever you miss the island.
2. Hang Out at Fisherman’s Village Walking Street
If you ask me where to take the family on a Friday evening, Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village is the answer. The old wooden shophouses along the beach turn into a bustling, colorful street market that everyone loves.
Street Food & Souvenirs: Stroll down the street with a mango smoothie, snack on grilled skewers or fresh seafood, and check out hand-crafted local gifts.
Beachside Fire Shows: This is always the highlight for kids (and adults!). Grab a drink, sit right on the sand at a beachside bar, and watch our local fire spinners put on a dramatic show right by the waves.
3. Rent a Private Van to Explore the Island
Riding a scooter around Samui is fun for couples, but with kids or grandparents? A private air-conditioned van, which cost around 600 baht per hour, is a total lifesaver.
Go at Your Own Pace: Forget rigid group tours. Want to spend extra time taking photos at the Big Buddha, cool off at Na Muang Waterfall, or grab lunch at a local beach shack down south? You call the shots.
Maximum Comfort: You get cold air-con between stops, zero stress about navigating local traffic, and you can stop for bathroom or snack breaks whenever the kids need them.
4. Take a Boat to Ang Thong National Marine Park
You see those dramatic green limestone islands sticking out of the water in the distance? That’s Ang Thong, and it looks straight out of a movie. It’s easily one of the best day trips you can take from Samui.
Island Adventures: You can snorkel with colorful fish, kayak along towering limestone cliffs, or explore hidden lagoons.
The Emerald Lake (Talay Nai): Take the climb up to see this stunning inland saltwater lake—the view from the top is unbelievable.
Local Tip: If you have younger kids, look for a comfortable boat tour with plenty of shade and space so everyone stays happy on the water.
5. Visit Rescued Elephants at Samui Elephant Sanctuary
Elephants hold a special place in Thai culture, and we love seeing them treated with the respect they deserve. Skipping old-school riding shows and taking your family to an ethical sanctuary is an unforgettable experience.
Observe, Don’t Exploit: At places like Samui Elephant Sanctuary, you get to walk alongside rescued elephants, feed them fresh fruit, and watch them bathe and roam naturally.
A Great Family Moment: It’s super educational for kids, letting them see how these gentle giants live in peace while supporting genuine animal welfare on the island.
Island Pro-Tip:
On Samui, we live by Sabai Sabai—taking it easy and enjoying the moment. Don’t try to rush through everything in one day! Pick a couple of these, bring your family’s good energy, and enjoy every minute of your trip. Have a wonderful time on our island!
